Cataract Surgery
Drs. Stelzner. Kappel, Kubal. and Braun
Our doctors use the most current proven methods in their cataract surgery. The doctors provide pre-operative consultations, second opinions and post-operative care. Cataract is age related condition that is a clouding of the natural lens in your eye. It starts imperceptibly and typically progresses over time. It may come on slowly if it’s age related or quickly(depends on medication, health condition or smoking), in younger or older patients. If it gets to the point of limiting your activities, it is time to consider whether you are ready to either get your glasses improved, or to have something done about the cataract. Cataracts never get better on their own, they progress over time. Fortunately there are excellent treatment options available.
Microincision phacoemulsification
Cataract surgery has evolved into a quick, simple outpatient procedure known as phacoemulsification. The surgery takes only about 10-15 minutes, and patients go home the very same day. To make the procedure as painless as possible, the eye is anesthetized with eye drops. A small incision is created, and using an ultrasound probe, the lens is broken up, or emulsified, into small pieces and removed from the eye. A small foldable lens implant, known as an IOL or intraocular lens, is then inserted into the eye where it unfolds into the proper position. The technology for IOLs has become so advanced that a variety of IOLs are now available, ranging from the standard monofocal lenses that provide excellent vision for either near or distance and the newer multifocal lenses that give patients a range of clear vision from near, far away, and in between.
