Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty or SLT is an alternative treatment option to glaucoma that can be used as a standalone treatment or in addition to medicated eye drops used to reduce eye pressure.
During this procedure, laser energy is applied to the trabecular meshwork within the eye to break apart blockage and clear the drain of the eye. This procedure generally takes only 10 minutes and is considered pain-free. SLT does not cause any damage or laser burns to the eye and is proven to lower eye pressure between 20-30%. It can be repeated if necessary.
SLT treatment is great for patients who may not be responsive to medicated eye drop therapy or may require stronger forms of treatment.
